Old Age Pensions.
The committee appointed by the House of Representatives to consider the question of old age pensions recommend that a system be established if a practical method of providing the necessary funds can be devised ; tb»t tbough it would be desirable to commence the pensions at the age of 60 yearn, a lower age than 65 veart would not be within t lie scope of finance ; that applicants for pens on* must hare resided in the Colony for 20 years immediately previous to the application; that no pensions be given to anyoue conTic ted of an indictable offence, unless he or she has received a free pardon or to anyone convicted of drunkenness during the eeyen years prerious to the application , and that every pensioner shall be entitled to a Hum of 8s a week, but that iv the case of husbiod and wife th<* joint allowance should be 16a a week. The Committee suggest that «he Government should appoint a Royal Commission to enquire fully into thequestion during the recess and take evidence They acknow* ledge the assistance given by the officers of the Government, especially Mr Richardson, Government Insurance Commis•ioner.—N.Z.
