THE REDUCTION OF RACE MEETINGS.
TO THE EDITOR o*' THE STAR. Sib, — The Manawatu Times is very wroth at the decisions of the racing conference held on Monday last at Marton. Why should that be so? The Manawatu (Palmerston) Club has not been touched while the Feilding Club, which is second only to Wan* ganui, has one meeting reduced. The grievance the limes is airing is that of the Ashurst Club, whioh it is proposed to abolish, and rightly too as it is only a totalisator meeting, where much less is given away in stakes than is received from the machine. It is a question if the author of the paragraphs referred to in the Times knows anything about racing, and he is probably prompted by some racing magnate in or around Palmerston. Such clubs as the Ashurst, Turakina, Sandon, Warrengate, Marton Hunt Club (racing), or Waverley should never be allowed to exist. There is far too much horse racing carried on through the medium of such clubs to the detriment of legitimate raoing clubs. The Times says " it is apparent the interests of the Metropolitan Club and the clubs near Wanganui were too strong for the southern portion of the district." Surely the writer is aware that the Metropolitan Club was not represented, nor was it invited to be. Had the delegate from the Manawatu Club been more alive to the interests of sporting one or more of the smaller clubs still left would have been wiped out of existence like the Ashurst Club (really a Palmerston suburban meet* ing). It is not yet quite certain that Feilding will be allowed to suffer, but some fifth rate meeting will have to drop out. I am, etc., Sport. Feilding, September 25th, 1894.
