Sad Fatal Accident
♦ THE JOCKEY CLEAVER SILLED. c A lamentable accident occurred at i the Palmerston racecourse yesterday, morning, resulting in the death of the 9 well-known cross-country rider Sidney 3 Cleaver, aged about 24 years. It ap 3 pears that the deceased was working I the five- year-old hurdler Mangatangat roa, the property of Mr G. McCarty 3 on the racecourse and had his mount * successfully over two hurdles but at » the third one the horse struck heavily * and rolled over the hurdle and on to 3 Cleaver. He was picked up by Messrs Parker, J. Lee, G. McCarty and others placed in a stretcher and eanied to I the caretaker's residence, where a dray was procured, in which he was slowly diiven to Mr McCarty's residence. A few moments after deceased was lifted from the conveyance to the house he expired. When passing along Park road he was quite conscious although in severe pain. To those in the dray ' the poor fellow said: "I'll be all right in a few minutes ; leave me at ! It is evident that deceased mußt . have been crushed internally by the > horse. His parents reside at West 1 Oxford, Canterbury, and Mr Fred. I Murfitt, his uncle, lives at Sandon. * The departed horseman was of an amiable disposition, thoroughly trustworthy, ana straightforward m all his transactions while engaged on the turf. He possessed plenty of pluck and serve and was considered one of | the best riders in the colony over 1 country. He rode to victory on many occasions and was especially success. . ful with the hurdler Spreydon last > year, landing the chestnut home a , winner in no less than six races. The : previous year he secured the double at the Manawatu races with Unify. ' Lately he has been training Mr Chit- ; ham'u trotting stallion Kentucky Wilks . on whom he won the Maiden Trot at . the lost meeting of the Palmerston Trotting Club, and was engaged to take the horse through to the Stratford meeting this week. Quite a gloom : was cast over the town when the sad news of the accident reached here, and ' much sympathy has been expressed for deceased's parents and relatives in | their misfortune. An inquest on tha body will be held to-day before Mr J*. Linton, District Coroner. — Standard.
