TELEGRAMS. «. (PEB PEKBS ASSOCIATION). Auckland, Sept. 22. The schooner Awanui is reported ashore at Oreti. All hands are pared The steamer Southern Cross called at Oreti to render assistance. A married Maori woman, named T« Wai Whakupa, died at Whangaroa through swallowing matches. Timothy Calbridge was fined 5s and costs for not having his house registered under the Infant Life Protection Act. The Magistrate taid registration should be strictly enforced. He did not want any Makin cases in this colony. The l«*j;al committee of the City Council have decided to recommend the "ouncil to decline the application of the Tramway Company to run trams on Sundays. The tangi over Tawhiao'a remains is the largest gathering of natives since 1879. Fully 8000 are assembled. The Maoris are most orderly, and there is no drunkenness. Fines are exacted for breaches of the rules. Twenty-sis tribes are represented, and there are representatives from all parts of the Island. In the centre a flagstaff has been erected, and from it is flying at halfmast a black flag which figured in the remarkable fight at Kangiriri. Wellington, This Day.
