'i A circular was read from the Taradale School Committee, Hawke's Bay, and asking the committee to endorse the foUowing resolution, viz. : "That in the opinion of this committee the present practice of leaving this inspection and examination . ol eaoh educational and echoor district year, after year in the hands of the same officer, is not conducive to the beet.interetitg of education. '" .* * The chairman stated that complaints had been made to him about some children who had passed the .2nd Standard being put back into the Ist, and the parents seemed to think that a child having once passed a certain standard it was unfair fpr it to again be presented in it. He (the chairman) would like the headmaster to explain this. Mr Hill didsoasfoUows: — Having recently examined the school carefully : he found that some children who had been very irregular in attendance had got so behind their class in work that they were doing nothing in that class, and were only a drag , on it, and sequently they had been put back a standard, say from the 2nd to the Ist, However, a child could not be presented a second time in the same standard, and although put back to the Ist it would have to be presented in the 2nd. This method was universally adopted. The committee were of, opinion that Mr Hill's explanation was quite satisfactory. y Messrs Worsfold and Taylor were appointed the Visiting Committee for I the next month, and the meeting adjourned. — .— PP— I_M»
