The Shearers' Strike in Australia.
MORE RIOTOUS PROCEEDINGS. j Per Press Association.] Stdnbt, August 29 A force of Unionists surronnded the stage coaches about to convey free labourers to the shearing sheds. During the uproar the horses attached to one of the vehicles bolted and the driver had his leg broken. The driver of the second coach became j intimidated and refused to work. The freemen were therefore disembarked and are encamped in the Hay railway goods- j shod under police protection. A large force of Unionists ate in the vicinity and are taking up a threatening attitude. At a meeting of magistrates in the district it was decided to swear in a number of special constables. This Day. Replying to a letter from the President of the Australian Workers' Union, The Premier stated he would amend the Trade Disputes Act in such a way that before next clip the shearers or the pastoralists could compel a judicial investigation by the Arbitration Court. He called upon the representatives of the shearers to put down all violence and outrage, and asked them to consider whether they could not arrive at some understanding and waive the dispute for the rest of the season, under protest, with a prospect of a full and fair investigation by the Arbitration Court. Mr Rae, speaking at Cobar, said many of the strikers out in camps were becoming desperate, and in some cases would stick at nothing to gam their ends.
