SHEEP RETURNS.
♦ ■ The sheep returns which have been laid on the table of the House disclose the interesting fact that on the year ending April 80th the sheep in the colony had increased by 742,187. As was the case on the year preceding this district shows an increase of 291,992, a very fair proportion of the whole. As our contemporary the Standard remarks on this subject -''This fact undoubtedly proves the assertion which has frequently been made that this coast has far and away outstripped any other part of the colony in the work of development, and it must be remembered that while tliia large increase is accounted for, the demands made upon our flocks for the continua.. tion of the frozen meat trade have been equal, if not greater than those of any other portion of new New Zealand." Consideration must also be given to the fact that new bush farms in the back country are being stocked very rapidly, and are a guarantee that at the termination of the year now current, a still larger increase may be expected with confidence. ____________
