Coolgardie Goldfield.

Mr Jean Galle, one of the most successful Coolgardie prospectors, is at present in Sydney. As in the case of the Londonderry mine, there was an element of romance in connection with the discovery of the Litanita. He :was advised by another prospector to try his luck on the track between BayleyV and the township. Getting to a spot indicated he soon found the cap of a reef actually level with the surface. On tracing it down for i«n feet, he discovered that gold of a very payable kind would be obtained, and at once took out a lease. He has since sold out to a syndicate, retaining an interest in the mine. Prior to the pegging out of the township proper, the claim was the general camping-ground for; all new arrivals. Diggers pitched their tents upon it, teamsters used some of the stone to block the wheels of their drays, and •miners putting up more pretentious dwellings built .their fireplaces of the quartz which has since been proved to contain large quantities of the very metal, to obtain which they had encountered numerous hardships and faced death in the shape of starvation. Had any of the stone so used been tested, Mr Galle would not have been the discoverer of one of the richest reefs at Coolgardie: The>forther he uncovered the reef the ricKfr/became the gold, and now, said Mr Galle, "it is one of the richest, if not the richest, on the field." Another singular fact is that Mr Beison, who subsequently discovered the Broad Arrow claim, had been' over, the spot and had not availed himself of the golden opportunity beneath his feet. .■■■■'X : , : '*
