Volunteer Items.

The Manchester Rifles paraded last night in the Assembly Booms for inspection by Lieut Col. Newall. Capt* Kirton, Lieuts. Bray and Halcombe, and thirty - fire non - commissioned officers and men were present. The Corps was instructed in the new musketry drill, and made very creditable progress. In the course of the drill Sergts. Milson, Aitken, Petherick and Corpl. Parker assisted. Before the men were dismissed Col. Newall stated that he had suggested to the Minister for Defence certain alterations in the method of conducting the class and volley firing and qualifying for marksmen's badges which, he was assured, would be improvements on the present system both as regards economy of time and of ammunition. At the proper / time the several companies under his., command would receive all necessary further information. He also informed the Corps that he was having printed ' ' the new musketry drill, and copies of the pamphlets would be sent to each officer and non-commissioned officer, * as soon as they were completed.
