LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. | Per Press Association]. Wellington, August 23 The Council met at 2.30 The Companies Account Audit Bill passed all its stages, The Gaming Bill was passed through Committee with some unimportant amendments. On the motion for the committal of the Wellington University Bill strong opposition was shown to the measure. Eventually the debate was adjourned till the following day. The Council then adjourned. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES The House met at 2.30 In reply to a question Mr McKenzie said there was no truth in the report that Mr C. R. Valentine, Produce Commissioner for this colony in England, was an officer of the New South Wales Government. The rest of the afternoon was spent in discussing the Riverton Harbour Bill, The House rose at 5 30. The House resumed at 7.30. The Married Women's Property Bill passed through Committee without amendment. The Factories Bill was committed at Clause 2, giving power to inspect the accommodation for shearers. Mr Beeves moved to add to the clause a penalty not exceeding £5 for every day during which non-compli-ance continues of a written notice by the Inspector as to amending or enlarging the accommodation for shearers. Clause 63 : What holidays to be allowed, a motion by Captain Russell to alter the clause so as to make Saturday a compulsory half holiday was lost by 42 to 1». Clause 64 was altered to provide that all employees in factories, and workwomen should have a half holi day but dairy factories, rabbit fac tories, and meat freezing works were exempted. It was decided that em ployes should not be paid for the half-holidays The remaining clauses weie passed with slight amendments The House rose at 2 10 a.m.
