PARLIAMENTARY.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (PBft PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, August 14. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. In the Legislative Council, the Adulteration of Bread Bill, to compel bakers to give full weight, no matter what class of bread it may be, was read a second time. The Council then adjourned. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30. The Tariff' and Industries Committee recommend that a representative should be at once sent to Australia to arrauge for Intercolonial reciprocity, and that in the meantime duty on Australian horses, cattle, and goods, similar to the duties imposed on New Zealand live stock and goods in the respective colonies, should be imposed in New Zealand. Replying to questions, it was stated : New one-pound postal notes will be issued in October, and new five-pound notes at the beginning of next year (in both cases the issue will be limited to £ 100,000) ; That it is not advisable to constitute a State monopoly for the manufacture of tobacco ; That a Bill is being prepared in the direction of limiting the maximum rate of interest legally chargeable by financial institutions or persons. That the Government had under consideration the advisability of assisting the settlers in new districts in the establishment of dairy factories and creameries ; That steps be taken to prevent speculators buying native land along the North Island Main Trunk Railway route. Id the course of the discussion on the education question, the Hon. Mr Reeves expressed a strong opinion that reform was wanted in the way of centralisation. The House adjourned at 5.30 p.m. The House resumed at 7.30. The House wont into committee on the Shops and Shop Assistants Bill. Mr W. Hutchison moved to include bars of Hotels in the definition of the shops. Mr Reeves opposed the motion on the ground it would endanger the safe passage of the Bill. The motion was carried on the casting vote of the chairman, and clause as amended was added to the Bill. On Mr Beeves' motion shops which exclusively carry on the business of fishmongers, fruiterers, confectioners, coffee houses, eating houses, were exempted from complying with the Act. A proposal to exempt poulterers, tobacconists, hairdressers, and chemists was lost. On the motion of Mr Willis a proviso was added to clause 3 to the effect that it was not incumbent on the proprietor of a shop to close for a half holiday on any week in which another public holiday falls. Progress was reported on reaching clause 6, and the House roso at 2.10 a.m.
