(Chronicle Special.) ( Wellington, August 14. ] A caucus of Government supporters ] was held this morning to consider this measure, when 45 members were present, < the Premier presiding. Mr Seddon ex- K . horted the party to support the Govern- * merit by passing the Bill without alteration, J as jf altered in any way it would give the Council a pretext for throwing it out. t There was a general discussion, the tone j of which was that the party should sup- a port the whole Hill, including the lease in perpetuity, One or two members spoke strongly ns to the attitude towards the part? taken up by the Minister for Lands. Mr Mdtenzie expressed regret I For his speech. He acknowledged that he t iv as wrong in so addressing the party, but fa pleaded his anxiety for the Bill as an 1 excuse for bis action. s
