The body of Jonathan Auld, mining agent, was found in the river this morning- He was last seen on Thursday night on his way home by • path along the river. He wan an old resident and W.M. of the Barn's Masonic Lodge. Wellington, August 12. The Hinemoa has completed a surve? of the route for the new cable across Cook Strait. An excellent bottom was fouud between Terawhiti and Cloudy Bay and the cable will be laid between these two points. The distance is 28 miles, or 12 tmlas shorter than between Lyell Bay and Cloudy Bay. The cable has been ordered from home, and will probably be laid by the Terranora. At the next meeting of the City Council the Mayor (Mr Fish) will move that amendments inado by the Statutes Revision Committee in the Hawkers and Pedlary Bill are unfair and unjust to ratepayers. The amendments objected to are in the sub-section clause 18, second line, section 26, and the whole of clause 34a. It is pointed out that this is an attempt to take legitimate revenue from the local authority, which, whilst increasing the revenue of the Charitable Aid Board, will not diminish the ordinary contributions.
