.#. (Per Press Association.) Dcnedin, August 9. A lighterman named Harry Morrison, was drowned tbis afternoon. He was saihng up the Harbour when the boom struck him and knocked him over. He appeared to sink at once. The driver of a passing bus reported tbe matter, aad a boat was sent out, but failed to fiud any trace of the man. Andrew Suttie, who was arrested at Wellington, was to-day committed for trial on a charge of obtaining goods by false pretences. Accused ordered goods from Stewart ana Co., Wellington, who imported tbem from Sydney. The gocds arrived at Lyttelton, but accused telegraphed to have them sent on to Dunedin by rail. He induced the clerk to give delivery without an order from the Union Company. Christchubch, August 10. The Championship Poutlry Show was opened this afternoon by the Mayor. Ez • hibits came from all parts of the colony. The strongest class in tbe show are Leg* horns and Hamburgs. Wyandottes,Brahmas and Cochins are well represented Auckland, August 10. Influenza or la grippe is acourgiog the Waikato nt present. A man named Geo, Dunn was found drowned in a well at Parua Bay, Whangaroi. He was subject to fits. The Inspector of Factories finding that some tradesmen were letting tbe half holiday provision become obsolete, f» attain enforcing the Act Lyttelton, August 10. The Rotomahana, wbich left Wellington at 4.15 yesterday afternoon, did not arrvie till 4 45 this afternoon, owing to a break down of lier engines when the yes sel was off Kaikoura. Temporary repairs were effected by the engine room staff, which enabled the steamer to be brought on here. Sbe left for Dunedin to-night, where the necessary repairs will be ef fected.
