The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1894. THE AWAHURI BRIDGE.
A conference of representatives of the Manawatu Road Board, Palmerston Borough Council, and Manawatu County Council (the contributing bodies to cost) regardiug the reconstruction of the bridge across the Oroua river on the Rangitikei line, and known as the Awahuri bridge, takes place at Palmerston to-day, and we learn from the Standard that Messrs G. L. R. Scott and J. P. Armstrong will place plans for the new structure before the conference. A few days ago Mr Rausou, chairman of th« Manawatu County Council, with Mr C. Bray, senr, engineer, visited the bridge with a view to considering the best means of repairing it. We understand these gentlemen came to *he conclusion that it would be advisable to remove two of the old spans, which were damaged, and erect five new seventy feet spans. Also, that strong protective works should be erected. It seems a pity that the engineers did not meet at the bridge together and there hold a consultation, when they would probably have mutually arrived at a scheme which would be of advantage and would at the sane time have saved the representatives on the contributing bodies a lot of trouble in selecting between the two separate repoiti.
