SOCIALISM.
TO THE KDlTiin OF THE SIAU. MB, — Seeing that some of your writers are looking at this question from a religious standpoint, I beg permission to introduce my little oar into the subject. I contend that Socialism ia not primarily a moral qu«*tion at all, any more than were the questions of Free School Education, State Farms or lastly the State Hank. I may men tioa, by the way, that these are all essentially Socialistic movements. Certainly it devolves on Christians who uphold Socialism to prove that it is not directly contrary to the teachings of their founder, but otherwise it is merely a question of, the common weal. When the Corn Laws were repeated, when slavery was abolished in Am erica — when our Free Public -"chools I were opened— theso questions had not been fought out on the grounds of Christianity, though they were Chris-tian-like movements, but on tbe broad and liberal ground of hu manity. Regarding Mr Goodbehere's attitude towards Socialism I may re mind him of the old saying " There's plenty of room at the top." Seeing that he is not near the bottom of the social scale it is not difficult to understand his contented satisfaction with the present social system, but " They that are whole need not a physician, hut those that are sick," and the masses are just pow very sick and need modern physicians and physic which it is to be hoped will be administered ere it is too late I am, etc., A.C.H. Feilding, July 23rd, 1894. P S. — Seeing that Socialism is such a Christian-like movement, I cannot understand people professing Christianity being against Socialism. Of course there were professing " Orthodox " Christians who defended slavery in America.— A. C.H.
