SOCIALISM.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAK. Sir, — After the most excellent letter by Mr Murray, published in Saurday's Star, you would, I think, be quite justified in refusing to publish further letters on tbis subject from such socialistic fanatics as Stanton or Bentley. As for myself, I suppose I must hide my diminished head, tbough I am of the same opinion still — viz., that these fanatical Socialists would not besitate to confiscate the property of the wealthy and help themselves out of the booty. There are, of course, Socialists and Socialists. In a certain sense I am a Socialist, and we all are Socialists. My family motto is : Non nobis nascimur (we are not born for ourselves alone) ; and I bave always endeavored to act up to it. If the teachings of morality and social duties as laid down in the New Testament could be literally carried out without reference to doctrinal tenets, the two or three hundred religious sects now existing would be merged into one. Anarchism, Socialism, Communism, and Fenianism could have no existence, and strikes and labour troubles (and I may add Trade Protection) would never have been thought of ; but to accomplish this desirable end we shall, as I intimated in a previous letter, have to await the more perfect development of human nature. [Before concluding this letter, I am desirous of saying that I very much regret to hear there is a certain rumour in the town that Mr Murray is about to resign his ministry which he has exercised here for, I think, about 16 years, during which time he has earned the respect and esteem — if not the love and affection — of all who have known him. I sincerely trust, however, that, if this rumour is correct, whatever may be the cause, Mr Murray may be induced to continue his ministration in Feilding.] I am, Stc, Saml. Goodbehere. Feilding, 23rd July, 1894.
