Apiti Church.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT ] The newly-erected Apiti Wesleyan Church was opened on Sunday last, and a tea and concert was held on Wednesday to celebrate the event. The building is of neat design, and was erected by Mr Buckman, who put extra work into the building not specified. The tea was held in a building ad joining the church, and was done ample justice to by the large number of people who were present. At the concert the Rev Mr Lee pre sided, and gave a short congratu latory address. The programme was contributed by Mesdames Buckman, Guy, Purnell, and Prince, Misses Laing and Buckman, Messrs B. Millar, Clapham, Hargreaves, and Church. Three little daughters of Mrs Prince and a daughter of Mrs Buckman sang a hymn under the conductorship of Mr Buckman, one of the little girls playing the accompaniment on an accordeon. The choir, consisting of Mesdames Buckman, and Prince, Miss Buckman, Messrs Church and Miller Bros, contributed greatly to the pleasure of the evening. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Buckman, and Messrs Hargreaves and Miller. Mr Guy read a statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the church which showed that £65 15s 6d had been received by subscrip tion, and £18 9s 3d as the result of the ceremony connected with laying the foundation stone, and £14 more was promised. The sum of £50 was received from the Church Loan Fund, and with the £4 collected on Sunday, a total of £152 4s 9d was reached The expenditure was £153 12s 3d, but the apparent deficiency was more than covered by the tea aad concert, from which they would get about £7, and the church would be opened practically free from debt. The trustees desired to thank the following persons for their gifts: — Mr Dillon, for the section on which the church stands, value £20 ; those who felled the bush and cleared the site for the church ; Mr Osborne for supplying the house blocks; Messrs D Mackenzie and Buck man for erepting the back and front fences respectively ; Mr J. Cobbe for a donation of two guineas and matting ; Mr Clapham for supplying plush for the pulpit ; Mr Fanthorpe for a table ; Mr Anyon for a music stool ; Mr W. Carthew for hymn books ; Feilding Star for free advertisement ; Mr Tolly , bible ; Mr Fowler, ornamental trees ; Mr Lowe, lamp; Mrs Vicary, table cloth ; Mrs Miller, pulpit cloth ; and the numerous persons who had given money. The usual vote of thanks brought the gathering to a close.
