Fight on a Steamer.
— . — o SENSATIONAL STRUGGLE IN A STOKEHOLE. A report from New York, May 29th saya : — " When the steamer" New York was cutting: her way through a thick bank of fog on Friday ni ht, a few miles off bandy Hook. Third Engineer Raum climbed down into the storeroom and told Chief Fireman HiDZ that be sluuld get- up more steam. The engineer spoke in such commanding tones that the chiet ' fireman got nettled. 'I he engineer became enraged and irranhed a twelve-foot poker handle which was protruding *rom one of tbe immense j furnaces, and was abo^t to run th« red hot iron through the body of the chief fireman, when Fireman Warner threw himself upon him from behind and bore him down, thus saving the life of Hinz Then commenced a terrible life-and-death struggle between Wagner and the engineer. The men were on the platform from which coal is shovelled into the furnaces. Both men are ot powerful build, with muscles of steel. They gripped each other where they lay, and rolled over and over, each trying 1 hard to push or roll the other into one of the blazing furnaces Wairner finally managed to pret hold of his adversary's throat, and he tightened his £rip until the engineer's eyes bulged from their sockets. When he let go, Kaum was alirost dead. A bucketful of water was dashed into his face and be revived sufficiently to drag himself to the elevator and be hoisted on deck. It was necessary to lock up the men till port was reached to prevent murder.
