The Foreign Office has published a use ful paper in the miscellaneous series oi reports on subjects of general and com mercial interest, giving a translated suui ruary of laws in force in [Switzerland re garding the treatment of inebriates Tim laws and regulations in the 22 cantons appear to differ but little from each other in their essential points, and are con eidered in principle as effective measures against intemperance. Habitual druDk •rds are liable to fine and imprisonment, and compolsorv confinement in boiues or houses of correction ; while considerable responsibility is incurred by publicans who supply strong drinks to chiidren, to those already intoxicated, or to those who by reason of their intemperance are forbidden to enter taverns. The report lor the year 1882 of tha EHikon Home ior Inebriates shows that for 1891 ot those under treatment 37*5 per cent rfeinmnea abstainers, 32 5 per cent remained temperate, and 30 per cent relapsed.
