AFFAIRS IN AMERICA.

♦ Tn i-: state of affairs in America at the present time is calculated to excite the protoundest alarm for the possible consequences, and pity for the innocent and law abiding section of that v ast community, who are certain to •>e the keenest sufferers. That a great nation which claims to be the foremost representative of freedom, in tho best sense of the word, should be divided against itself so far as to be practically on the verge of a civil war, shows that the value of its laws and institutions »- ueen either over-estimated, or that hey have been badly administered, i iid outrages which have already been ommitted, or are threatened, have heen and will be the acts of men who ■iKeiu to be under neither legal, moral, i artr religious restraint. The law ap|te;ir« to be no support to those to whom are entrusted the carrying out of its behests, therefore the military, both militia and constabulary, dare not act vigorously because they have every reason to dread the after consequences of mjy net of violence on their part when in conflict with the law breakers, H icidhhed has already taken place in Chicago where the troops fired on the mub hut the losses on either side have not been reported as yet. Che crimes which have already been committed are painful in their details. The worst feature in tho case is that the people in California are aiding the strikers and the militia are also assisting them. We quite believe that the two great political parties in the States, the Kgpublicans and the Democrats, are working heartily on their respective sides to reap some political advantage out of this disorder, and are the prime instigators of many of the outrages which baye put such a blot on this page of the history of the United states of America.
