Professor Theodore Lichtwark advertises to-day that he will give an exhibition of horsemanship in the Carbine Stables on Thursday evening next. The Professor lias received numerous testi- [ monials from pupils and others who have witnessed him exercise his skill, and exchanges also speak well of his success. A patent and useful improvement in harness will also be exhibited. We (N.Z. Times) are glad to state that the Hon. Mr Ward had greatly improved in health yesterday. La grippe is so prevalent at New Plymouth that it has been found necessary to close the public school. We have received from Mr F. Towler some very sweet apples, well flavored, grown from seedlings. We have to acknowledge receipt of a complimentary ticket to the 1.0. G.T. Social, in the Foresters' Hall this evening. Work was begun to-day towards the erection of the telephone wire to Makino. The office will be on the premises of Mr j Cowie, the Postmaster. The Napier Telegraph commences an article thus :^-" The breakwater is at present in everybody's mouth." Bad for the breakwater ! The funeral of the late John Kitchen took place this afternoon, and was well attended. The Rev. A. Innes Jones officiated at tbe cemetery, and Mr A. Eade was the undertaker. G. W. Woodroffe, J.P., and a number of Masterton burgesses, petition, through Mr Hogg, for a redaction in the size of their borough from 4811 to 1200 acres. They describe themselves as burgesses of " a huge ill-advised borough, .... chiefly sheep, cattle, and agricultural farm lands." The Shop and Sh«p Assistants Bill provides that all shops, except fish mongar*, fruUc-rees, coffee-hou-es, restaurants and eating-houses shall be closed on one day each week after] p.m., and employees (amongst whom are moluded hotel assistants) shall have a half- holiday. Chemists' shops shall dose, bu' may re_ppon in the evening from 7 to 9, and maj supply medicine during the afternoon if it can be proved that it is urgently re quired. Mr W. Dixon, of Palmerston North, has prepared two very neat illuminated addresses, which are to be presented to Messrs S. Waters and W. L. Meek, of Wellington, in recognition of their gratuitous services as truitees in the estate of the late Mrs Joseph Dixon. The addresses are lettered on opal and handsomely framed. They are the joint gift of tho members of the deceased lady's family, and they will no doubt rank amongst the valued possessions of the recipients. — Manawatu Times.
