Tbe bridge across the Kiwitea stream opposite Mr D. P. Buchanan's is being repaired. In tbe House Mr Pirani has given notice of his intention to introduce tho Pohangina County Bill. The Kiwitea County Council have decided to raise a loan to cover their share of the cost of repairs to the Onepuhi bridge. The bankruptcy estate of Gaskate and Son. Liverpool, commission Jirokcrs, who filed recently, shows the liabilities to bo £44,925 sterling. Tho nsseti are £1014. The name of Mr J. Stevens, member for Rangitikei, appears upon the list of proposed members of the Native Affairs Committee in the House. The Birmingham Mountaineer's Football Club intend holding a concert and dance next month. The date will probably be the 26th, but due notice will be given. At Saturday's meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, the Chairman informed the Council that he had written to Mr J. Stevens, M.H.R., asking him to endeavor to get the Government to vest all reserves within the Kiwitea County in the Council. The ladies of Birmingham have or ganised a dancing class, and they intend holding assemblies at short intervals during the winter months. The first of the series was held on Friday last, there being a very good number present. The Chief Commissioner of Railways was a passenger by this morning's train to Wellington, having been on a tour of inspection in the Auckland province. It is to bo hoped that he took notice of the miserable accommodation for passengers and goods at the Makino station. It is stated that Colonel Fox has declined to draw his salary ou the ground that he does not think people should be paid for doing nothing, which is what he is compelled to do. The Irish Nationalists hold a meeting in Liverpool on May 18 to discuss ways and means. Mr J. P. O'Connor presided, and Mr Justin McCarthy spoke. He made an appeal for funds. Ho said the recent collapse and financial distress in the United States and Australia, and the reports of disunion among the antiParnellites, had deprived them of financial support. Mr A. H. Wilson has been requested by the settlers at Colyton and the Harbour Board Block to repeat his lecture on " Scientific Dairying," and will do so at the beginning of next month. Mr Wilson requests us to state that be does not receive any pay for lecturing, as he lectures only to interest the settlers. At the evening service at St. John's hesterday, the Rev. Innes Jones mentioned the annual meeting of parishioners would shortly take place, and in order that the matter might be discussed beforehand he stated that he thought an assistant Curate should be procured, as one was insufficient to attend to the requirements of the largely increasing parish. Members of the Kiwitea County Council have not fallen in with the idea to contribute one-fourth of the cost of the bridge across the Kiwitea stream within the Feilding Borough. The Chairman expressed himself decidedly in opposition to contributing anything towards the cost and Crs Williamson, Morton and Jacob thought they also should oppose the proposal. What is the correct definition of the term "pot shot?" The question arose at the Napier Supreme Court, when counsel asked a witness if a shot which killed a cow was a pot shot ? His Honor asked what was meant by the term. He understood it to mean a narrow miss. Counsel, however, interpreted the words as meaning " a snap chance shot." Which is correct ? asks the Telegraph. |When a man is shooting for " the pot " he does not give the bird a chance, but kills it sitting to make a certainty of his dinner. Arrangements are almost completed for the forthcoming re-production ou Wednesday evening of tho revised version of Mr Knight's play ' The Banshee.' We understand that considerable alterations have been effected sinco its first production in reference to tho several appearances of the " unearthly visitor," and also in the last act. Many of those who witnessed the performance are anxious to do so again, and as a great uumber were unablo to attend through prior arrangements there is every probability of the seating capacity of the Assembly Rooms being taxed to its uttermost on Wednesday evening. In discussing the Council's liability to a portion of the cost of repairs to Onepuhi bridge, the Chairman of the Kiwitea County Council, at Saturday's meet, ing, that they should have a commission to decide if the Manchester Road Board was liable to a portion of the cost of the Vinegar Hill bridge. Should this be decided in favor of the Council they might arrange with the Manchester Road Board to relieve the Council of its liability in the Onepuhi bridge, and the latter body would accept the responsibility of the former body's share of the Vinegar Hill bridge. Cr Williamson thought that when McCrae's road is completed the Halcombo Town Board would be quite as much interested in the Onepuhi bridge as the Kiwitoa County Council, and should bo asked to contribute.
