MrJ. Stevens, M.8.R., had told Mr Lowes and himself that the Govern ment had expressed their willingness to ■ keep the road open if the Council bad not i the funds. It would cost about £1500 to remove all the slips and unless they were removed the whole road would require re-metalling. He thought application should be made to the Government by the Council to have the slips removed at once, and if they agree to do so their Engineer i should be instructed to proceed with the work as soon as advice has been received and not wait till next meeting. The chairman said that the Hon. Mr Reeyes had promised to do his best to get the Government to keep the road open, and if pointed oat that the Council had ! reached the limit of their overdraft the ! Government might do the work. Mr Homer moved a resolution dealing with this matter later on. Mr Jacob presented a petition signed by G. P. Church and nineteen other ratepayers in the Oroua ward asking that the proposed road through Mayfield be not made, bat that a deviation be made to Hayne's line and from there to Mackay's line. Messrs Buchanan and Levett waited on the Council to oppose the proposal con* tamed in a petition sent to the last meet ing of the Council asking to have certain sections declared a special rating district over which a loan would be raised for the purpose of making a road through Mayfield property. They objected to being included in the special rating district. After discussion it was decided to hold over further consideration of the matter till next meeting, by which time the matter would ba gone into more particularly and legal advice obtained. The deputation thanked the Council and withdrew. Proposed by Cr Williamson, seconded by Cr Reid, That Mr C.
