The sentry boxes will now be turned into cradles, and the underscrub will once more flourish in peace. The Committee of the Feilding Debating Society met last evening and decided to have the first debate on July 9th. The subject chosen was : " Would prohibition of the sale of intoxicants compensate for any injustice dono or loss occasioned thereby." A special meeting of the committee of the Feilding Branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held at Mr Reade's office last night, Mr F. Flavell was re-appointed special constable for the Oroua district on behalf of the Societies. An Antwerp pigeon, evidently blown out to sea, met the s.s. Hauroto about 400 miles from Wellington, and hovered around her, at one time settling. Unsuccessful attempts were made to capture the bird, until, on Monday evening, overcome by exbaustion, it fell on the deck and was secured. There was a good attendance of members of the Manchester Rifles last night when the corps was inspected by Lieut. Col. Newall. THe brunt of the work fell on the non-commissioned officers, who acquitted themselves very creditably. After the parade Lieut.-Colonel Newall expressed himself well pleased with the efficiency and soldierly appearance of the men. Lady Henry Somerset and Miss Williard aspire to tic the white ribbon of a perfect teetotallism round the world. The campaign in Australia promises to be the main feature of this great tour, L in; course is to be Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, and Brisbane. All along the line of route strenuous endeavors will be made by these two crusading ladies to influence all the leading men and women of each district. The officials on the Wangauui-Palm-erston train were amusingly " had " yesterday. As Terrace End was approached a lady was seen standing on the station, and, being taken as an intended passenger, the train was stopped. The lady only wished to extend affectionate greetings to a friend on the train, and her mission being successfully accomplished, she thanked the guard for his consklerateuesß in stopping the train, aud left the platform.— Standard. A new club was formed in Feilding yesterday evening, for the purposes of musical and social jollity, The club will be known as the 5.P.5.0., and will meet every Thursday in the Feilding Chambers. This morning as Mr Schapleski was cressing the Kiwitea ford near Mr Retemeyer's with a three-horse load of oats and flour his dray capsized, and about half his load was damaged. The mishap was caused by P- lp£ which lies in the stream on the fa* wle of $he ford from Feilding and which cannot be detected by anyone crossing until they are on it. Several other narrow escapes from accident have occurred at the same place. The Mutual Improvement Society last evening discussed the subject : " Would it be just and beneficial for the State to restrict the accumulation of large fortunes, and apply the superabundance to the sy.%tenjatic hj&sGning of poverty." This subject will be discussed at Palmerston on Wednesday next between the Palmerston and Feilding Societies, the latter taking the affirr mative. The question was well debated, and the weak points in the affirmative side were pointed out by several of tho speakers. '

Mr S. Knight has revised his play, " The Banshee," since its initial production. The last act has been considerably improved, and other small alterations have been made in the drama. There is every probability of the piece going smoother, if that were possible, on its production next Wednesday than when first staged. The deputation appointed by the settlers advocating the erection of a bridge across the Rangitikei River at Otava, waited on the Minister of Lands at Wellington on Wednesday afternoon. No definite promise was made to the deputation, who were introduced by Mr J. Stevens, M.H.R., but the Minister promised to lay the matter before his colleagues for favorable consideration. The deputation returned home by the mid-day train. The other evening two of the unemployed marched up to the residence of a large landowner not far from Feilding and requested of him some tea and a shake-down in one of his sheds, as they complained of having been tramping for a fortnight in search of work, which had proved unavailing. His Majesty replied sarcastically : " You have put in Parliament the workingmen's candidates, so now we will see what they will do for you. and the sooner you are off my place the better I shall like it." The poor fellows went on their way musing over the mutability of human affairs. We notice that many of our contemporaries have mis-read the offer of Mr J. Wright Stewart to the Manawatu County Council. Most unfortunately it is not a direct offer of £6000 for the tramway, but contingent upon the company being floated, which, we take it, is a very different matter. The agreement in effect is simply tying the County up from dealing with the property for a twelvemonth, they taking all risks if Mr Stewart is not successful in floating his scheme. Of course we (Manawatu Herald) should much like to see him able to do that which he proposes, but we have yery little faith in his ability to do it.
