Proposed Deviation of the Feild ing- Awahuri Road.
♦ — At yesterday's meeting of the Mana watu County Council, Mr E. G. Cox County Clerk, submitted the following report : — " As directed by resolution passec at last meeting, I visited the site oi the proposed deviation on the Feilding Awahuri road, and beg to report as follows : — The length of proposed new road (following the formation originally made by the Land Corporation) would be 48 chains 52 links— viz. : 15 chains 8 links through land owned by Mr Munro, 18 chains 81 links through Mr Darragh's, and 4 cfcains 63 links through Mr Hunter's properties. The cost of formation would apparently not run into a large sum, but there would be one small bridge to erect, and the compensation asked for land and severance by the above owners would amount to a considerable sum, Mr Munro mentioning £150 and Mr Darragh £200, not including fencing. I have written to Mr Hunter, but have not yet had his reply. Then, Messrs Whisker and C. Bud would require compensation or require the Council to maintain at least one of the old bridges so that they could have access to the new road. Under these circumstances, it seems that little or nothing would be gained by the deviation for a good number of years, especially as it is said that one of the bridges in the bush (on the present road) could be replaced by a pipe culvert, and travellers would be sorry to lose the pretty drive through the bush on the present road site. As you [the chairman] have bee i over the ground with the overseer, you will be able to give the Council further information and advice as -to the desirability, or otherwise, of making the proposed alteration. The overseer tells me that the recent heavy flood was all over tiie proposed new road."
