The Licensing Committees.

[Per Press Association.] Danevirke, June 6, The Waipawa licensing committee granted all the applications for renewals and transfers, but refused to grant any 1 1 o'clock licenses. Wellington, June 6 The Wairarapa Licensing Committee granted twelve renewals, adjourned three applications, and refused one application for a wholesale license. The committee announced that it was their intentiou to see that the Act of 1881 was strictly carrifd out. Great interest was taken in the proceedings of the City Licensing Committee meeting to-day, and the courtroom was crowded. The Bench heard all the applications seriatim. Inspector Pender said there had been a great improvement in the conduct of several of the houses of late. Complaints were made as to the quality of liquor sold, and 63 samples were found to be all right by the Government analyst with the exception of two, in which there was too much water. After about an hour's deliberation, Mr Martin announced that the committee had decided to cancel three licenses — namely, Provincial (in Molesworth street), Jubilee (in Tinakori road), and Cattell's (known as llylands, in Grey street). All the other applications would be granted and exteiitions made till 1 1 o'clock. Mr Martin remarked on the fact that since the new committee had been elected there had been a marked improvement in the conduct of certain houses, and he hoped this would continue. Dunedin, June 6. At the Caversham licensing meeting the committee granted live publicans' licenses, and fixed the hour of closing at 10 o'clock. The other three were adjourned — the Caversham, Edinburgh Castle, and Commercial hotels.
