We (Post) regret to learn that Mr C. M. Crombie, Commissioner of Taxes, is still confined to bis bed, very ill. Notice is given by the Deputy Official Assignee that a first dividend of 3/6 in £, in the bankrupt estate of J. C. Morey, is now payable. Two families who have been at tbe Islands after mutton birds, have returned to Auckland after an absence of six weeks with 20,000 birds, the value of which is 1350. The following appointments are gazetted :— Edward Darker Moseley to be a cadet in the R.M. Court, Wellington ; James Grey to be Shorthand and Typewriter to the Premier ; R. G- Groom to be a member of the Hawko'a Bay Land Board ; Mrs Grace Neill to be a Factory Inspector for New Plymouth, Masterton and Napier districts. The inaugural dinner of the Rangitikei Licensed Victuallers Association at the White Hart Hotel, Marton, on June sth, promises to be a decided success, judging from the way tickets arc going. If anyone would like to be present they can get a ticket from any of the hotelkeei>ers of the district or Mr J. G. Stevens, the secretary, Marton. We have to acknowledge receipt of a copy of the first issue of the new series of Fair Play, which is now published as a monthly magazine by Messrs McKee and Gamble. The number cortainly reflects much credit on the enterprising proprietors. A young man named Charles Corcoran of Ohingaiti, who for the past few weeks has been lying seriously ill at the Hospital, passed away yesterday at about 10 o'clock. Amongst tbe numerous marriages which have taken place lately in this district is that of Mr W. Beard, of Peep-o'-Day, eldest son of Mr J. Beard, of Marton, to* Miss Katherine Stringer, fourth daughter of Mr L. Stringer, of Feilding. The newly-married couple have taken up tbeir residence at Pcep-o'-Day. Tbe Auckland architects stipulate in tbeir specification that before the final payments are made for any contract the contractor must show receipts that he has paid all bis men and settled with the sub-contractors. This is the result of the Workmen's Lien Act. It would be to the interests of both employers and men if this stipulation were brought into vogue throughout the colony. Professor Blackie was asked to procure a teacher for a Highland parish school, and received numerous applications -amongst others, from a student of his own class named Macfadpen.
