Those resident in Cheltenham and Kiwitea took occasion of the holiday yesterday to hold sports at Cheltenham in Mr Bruce's paddock. The weather was somewhat threatening and, no doubt, prevented some from a distance attending ; however, at least 350 persons attended during the afternoon, which is very good for a country gathering. About £10 was given away in prizes, including a quantity of toys for children's races. Thirty pounds were raised by private subscription and the sum of £12 10s was taken at the gate, and consequently the financial results are very satis factory, there being a surplus of between £15 and £20, which will be devoted to a fund for the erection of a hall at Cheltenham. The events were got off promptly and the officials deserve credit for the way in which they worked to make the gathering a success. Mr Cartwright is an efficient ' secretary and much of the success of the | affair is due to his efforts. Mr H. S.
