WASTE MATERIAL.

TO THE EDITOR OF THK STAR Sir, —Efforts have been made from time to time to introduce our timber into the Mother Country, but apparently so far with no beneficial results. Whether it is prejudice on the part of timber merchants at Home, or laxity on the part of those who have endeavored to place the woods upon that market, deponent sayeth not, but- it is evident that the very useful and beautiful timbers we have in New Zealand do not find a market at Home, and are not so universally known as they deserve to be. It is to be regretted that so much of our forests shall be destroyed, and we believe that we are already beginning to feel the effects of our prodigality in this matter. A cabinet maker of this town, who has had considerable experience in the working of all kinds of wood in the colonies, says that he considers there is no timber in the world to equal that of New Zealand for cabinetmaking purposes. . He instances a gentleman in Makotuku, Harbor Board, who has a chest of drawers which" for beauty could not be equalled hy any painter or designer. He believed thatif it was sent Home it would fetch a very high price. The more a person looks at it the more he seems to be fascinated with the numerous ■ designs, consisting of river and mountain scenery. We notice tens of thousands of feet of beautiful timber in the Apiti. district which is now being felled to rot and burn away. It is a great pity that such quantities of timber should be allowed to go to waste. .":■ '■ "":'". lam, etc., Slasher and Axb. Feilding, May 22nd, 1894. ' , .?
