BIRMINGHAM v. MARTON.

This match was played on the Feilding Oval on Saturday in the presence of a fairly large number of spectators, and resulted in a win for Marton by 18 points to nil. The winners played with much combination, Aldsworth, Iveson, T. Cameron and Rockell, amongst the forwards, and Lees and McDonnell, amongst the backs, being the most conspicuous. McDonnell scored three tries and Iveson one ; three were converted. Despite the vast difference in the scores the game was not so one sided as many would suppose. For the first part of the game the Mountaineers more than held their own, and all were astonished at their play when compared with the previous Saturday. All they want is a little coaching and a better knowledge of the game to make them one of the toughest teams in the Union. Their collaring is good, the weak points being combination and passing. Bell and " Punch " were the best of the forwards, and Barlow (2) and Ross were the pick of the backs. Mr Cooper made an efficient referee, and Messrs Smith and Taylor acted as touch judges.

Fine weather was experienced in Wellington on Saturday. The Athletics were beaten by Petone by 8 points to 3. In the Wellington v. Melrose heat, the former team won, the scores being 40 to 3.
