Mr Wilson, the statiouinaster, has returned from his holiday and resumed duty. A private wire received in Auckland states that Mr D. O'Brien's Florrie won the Rosehill Handicap at Sydney on Saturday last. The concert committee desiro to tender their thanks to those ladies and gentlemen -who assisted in the glees at the concert last evening. Mr G. F. Bishop, solicitor, who has for some time been in practice in Feilding, has taken over a business in Marton, where he will reside for the future. A land-rail, a very scarce bird, was shot at Matahiwi, Hawke's Bay, on Sunday last. It is believed to be the second that has been shot in the colony. Mr E. Charles thanks those kind friends who subscribed for him when his horses were injured on the railway line a short time ago. Wo have to thank the officers of the Loj*al Ruahine Lodge, Ashurst, for a complimentary ticket for their grand plain and fancy dress ball on the Queen's Birthday. The average value of a bale of Australian wool in 1860 was £25 12s. In 1872 it had reached its highest point, £'26 10s. In 1892, however, it had sunk to £12. A social and coffee supper will be hold in the Makino School, on Friday, May 25tb, in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church. Further particulars will be duly advertised. A contemporary says : — A man named William Hayes, who was born at the Hutt 50 years, has just died of hip disease, which had its origin in a thrashing administered by a schoolmaster to him when a boy. The Wairarapa Star says:— Ayouug lady of Masterton who had a great abhorrence to children, was married two years ago. She is now the mother of five. She first gave birth to triplets and afterwards twins. The D.0.A., Mr G. J. Scott, gives notice of the bankruptcy of C. F. Lampp, of Stanway, laborer, and T. M. Jackson, of Birmingham, butcher. The meetings of creditors will be held at the Courthouse, Feilding, on Tuesday, the 22nd instant. A very successful trial of Bennett's stump extractor was held by Mr J. Cotter, at Siberia, Ashurst, yesterday afternoon. A large matai stump, five feet in diameter, was extracted without the slightest difficulty. It was found that time would be saved by making the derrick 14ft high instead of 12ft. The usual weekly meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society will be held in the Primitive Methodist Church this evening at 7.80, when papers on " Dickens " will be read. The Secretary has received a communication from the Palmerston Debating Society enclosing four subjects, one of which is to be selected by the Feilding Society as the subject of a debate to be held in June at Palmerston with the latter Society.

A football match was played on the Oval yesterday afternoon between the Union Club (Feilding) and the Kia Ora Club (Palmerston). The sides were well matched, and a good game resulted in a wiu for the visitors by 11 points to 6. Hoppy, Young and Corkery scored a try each for the winners, Sedgwick kicking a goal from one of the tries, and Gosling and Bellve scored a try each for the Unions. In oidcr to iais© fuuds for tl\© Makiuo School and Library it was decided recently to give a concert in the Schoolhouse there, the proceeds of which would be devoted for that purpose. Several young ladies in the Makino district bave been working energetically to bring this concert to a successful issue, and they have been fortunate in obtaining the services of several of the most prominent vocalists in Feilding and surrounding districts. The concert takes place tomorrow evening, and a capital programme is to be submitted, which, in itself, should warrant a crowded house. Mr Friberg, the master at the Colyton School, had a pleasant surprise the other clay. It seems that on Tuesday last, May 15th, he had been in charge of the school just one year. On entering the school after bis lunch he found on his table a very handsome set of field glasses iv a case, with the following intimation of their errand : — " To-day being the .iQuiversary of your arrival iv Colyton, we, the children of the school, ask you o accept this gift as a memento of this lay, and as a slight token of our esteem." j it is, indeed, pleasant to record evidence jf such a good feeling as appears to ] xist between the master and the ■ upils at Colyton. At a boardinghouse kept by a pious, conomical old lady, iv New Plymouth, here was a sameuess about the bill of fare at dinner each day that did not ;>lease the boarders. If on Sunday there ivas a roast leg of mutton, on Monday it qipeared ou the table cold. On Tueslay it would appear as a hash, and on ■Vcduesday and the rest of the days of the week the mutton was dished up in lifferent ways. One of the boarders on akiuy his seat at the table one day devoutly bent his head over his plate and, as if saying grace, said " Hebrews the thirteenth chapter and eighth verse." Mr A. C. Gregor, who recently started business iv Feilding as a cabinet-maker and upholsterer, has on view in his shop, in Manchester street, several pieces of furniture made after the styles which are the most popular modes in England, where Mr Gregor has had considerable experience in the manufacture of furniture. A piece that is worthy of notice is a wardrobe, made of riinn timber, with fluted and carved panels, which give it a very neat and attractive appearance. There is a pedestal cupboard, dressing-table, and washstand to match the wardrobe. Mr Gregor does his own carving, and a good sample is exhibited in a sofa. All the furniture in this establishment is of the best quality, and the proprietor is determined to make nothing but the best and keep no inferior furniture. The articles mentioned are well worthy of inspection.

A poll will be taken at the Town Hall, Birmingham on Monday, 21st inst., on a proposal to borrow £928. The Manchester Rifles will hold a parade this evening in the Assembly Rooms. Entries for Messrs Gorton aud Son's Feilding stock sale, on the 25th instant, are published to-day. A number of town sections will be sold at the same time on behalf of Messrs Lethbridge and Sous. A sprightly young girl who became Countess of Mar scolded a minister of the Scottish kirk for not bowing to her in the cburch. " 1 beg your pardon," he answered, " but, you know, aDgel worship is not permitted by the Church of Scotland " According to the North Otago Times, the Rocky Mountain Cleft coolly tells its readers the subjoined yarn : — " \ revolution hos broken out in New Zealand. Mr Stout is leading the Government forces, and a man named Seddon is in charge of the rebels."
