- FEILDING v. BIBMINGEAM. The first Cup match of the season between clubs in the Manawatu Rugby Union was played on the Feilding Oval on {Saturday afternoon brtween the above teams and after a well fought game resulted in a win for the local club by 24 points (three j goals and three tries) to nil. This "'* was the first match the Birmingham team has played, it being a new club, and they did very well for beginners, several of them showing good form, but their great drawback was a want of practical knowledge of the game. However, it is safe to assume they will give a good account of themselves towards the end of the season. Matravers kicked off for Feilding who at once forced the ball into their opponents' twenty-five and the visitors were forced down a few minutes after the commencement. From a kick into the air, A. Parr caught the ball and after a clever run touched down behind the goal posts scoring the first try, from which Strachan kicked a goal. Shortly after Feilding were awarded a free. kick, but Bronghton's attempt to kick a goal although a good one, was unsuccessful. R. Parr, W. Watts, Matravers, Robinson and ~1. Watts indulged in some very good passing, which resulted in the visitors being forced down. W. Watts succeeded in crossing the line shortly after, but the ball was called back for off-side play. Several scrams were formed near the visitors' goal line and Strachan eventually passed to W. Watts who scored, a try near the corner flag. Broughton. succeeded in putting the ball over the bar. Matravers very nearly scored another try but W. Barlow cleverly stopped him in front of the goal. On changing sides, F. Barlow kicked off and the . visitors were again compelled to defend their goal line, W. and F. Barlow an^ Moss putting in , serviceable wor&V After a good run Jack Robinson gavM A. Parr a splendid pass, and the latter^ succeeded in crossing the line but lost the ball, W. Barlow securing it, thus saved a score against his side. However, the local men had not finished scoring and in a very ; short time L Watts had scored a try for Feilding. The kick at goal waff a failure, the distance being too far. Another try was scored by Matravers, no goal resulting from Broughton's kick. Some of the most exciting play of the day was witnessed when the local men passed splendidly and carried the ball across the field' three tinfes Robinson eventually scoring hear the corner. The two Barlows, Fisher, Moss and Sole worked bard to remove danger, and succeeded in transferring play to their opponents' end of the field for a time, where Moore stopped what looked like a score.. After exchanging several long kicks; A. Parr took the ball from touch line play and scored behind the posts. Matravers was entrusted with the kick at goal and succeeded in putting the ball over the ban The visitors rushed the ball to the* local 255, where Moore, by * serviceable kick, removed their last chance of scoring, time being called shortly after with play in mid- field. Bobinson's passing has greatly improved and toward! the end of the game it was a noticeable feature, though all the Feilding men passed well. For the ' winners Oldham, Matravers, Martini, . A. Parr, and Robinson were about the ?>ick and for the losers the two Barows. W. Bell, Soles, Yiteky, and Rouche. Mr GK Elliot, of Palmerston gave every satisfaction m referee and Messrs R. Taylor and Kelleher acted as line umpires. ;
The Cup match played at Palmers* ton on Saturday) between the Pirates and Kea Kahas, resulted in a wm for the latter Club by six points to three (two tries to a penalty- goal). ThY match was evenly fought but the winners' backs were too many for tht losers.
