Christchurch Unemployed.
[FKB PKESS ASSOCIATION. J Chhistchubcii, May 10. A meeting of ladies, convened by the Mayor, to devise means for assisting the unemployed, was held this afternoon. The Mayor said the idea was 5 to collect as much in subscriptions as ' possible in order to give employment } to the more needy of those out of work. I Old men, -whom Government could not place on works owing to their decrepitude, would be considered first in apportioning the employment. The ladies present formed themselves into a committee to canvass the city and suburbs for subscriptions. The fund started by the Mayor for . providing work for the unein- } ployed now amounts to £50, and work I will now be found for men over sixty years of age. At a meeting of the employes at the Addington workshops to-day it was decided that each employee should subscribe half a day's pay to the fund for finding work for the unemployed in ' and around Christchurch.
