The Unemployed and Homeless.
(PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, May 8. At a meeting of the trustees of the Benevolent Institute this afternoon, a. discussion took place on the suggestion of the Chairman, the Rev. Van Steyeren, that, with the view of providing lot the large number of people said to be sleeping out, shake-downs should be made foe them at the Benevolent Home. . It was mentioned that the Harbor Board was agreeable to give the use of a woolshed at the Railway wharf as a shelter shed, and eventually a committee was appointed to interview the Board as to the shed, and purchase necessary blankets* and mattrasses. The Gear Meat and Happy Valley Companies have provided a quantity of meat for soup for the unemployed. Messrs McEwen and Churchill supply bread, and the Grey Valley Coal Company a quantity of wood. A number of other tradesmen are providing spoons, basins, etc. Dunkdtn, May 8> Tweuty-fivo married men out of work were selected by the Labour Bureau today for co-operative works at Catlins. Another twenty-five are to be sent to the Otago Central Railway nest week* -
