Captain Edwin wired at 12.50 p.m. today : Indications for frost to-night. The vital statistics for Palmerston for the month of April are — Births, 21 ; deaths. 2. To-morrow Mr Chas. Can* will bold his Birmingham stock sale, commencing at 1 o'clock. The Hon. W. P. Reeves, Minister of Labor, will deliver a speech at Palmerstou this evening. A debatiug society down south intends to discuss the question, "Is it a crime or onlj- a sin to adulterate whiskey ? Oue hundred and four tous of butter were shipped from the New Plymouth breakwater for London during the last four weeks. The Parekaretu Express states that Mr W. A. Floyd has purchased the goodwill of the Royal Hotel, Ohiugaiti, for £2500. A trial of Bennett's stump extractor will take place ou Mr A. Gust's property at Campbelltown to-morrow afternoon, at 2 o'clock. For their Bulls stock sale to-morrow, Messrs Gorton and Son have very large entries of cattle aud siieep, and in addition a steel binder aud double- furrow plough. Mr Patrick Mcllroy gives notice of his intentiou to apply for a license for the Rangawahia hotel at the next meeting of the Licensing Bench to bo beld at Marton on Juue sth, 1894. Shooting began early yesterday (Suuday) morning, and some good bags were made. There has been uo ranger appointed yet by the Acclimatisation Society for this part of the Wellington District. A man named Massey, 45 years of age, employed by a chemical manufacturer in London, while emptying a lime tank, slipped and was immersed to his waist in lime, the heat of whicii was 150 degrees Fahrenheit. He was takeu to the hospital, but died soon after. The members of the Bessie Doyle Company arrived in Feildiug by this morning's train from Wanganui. The reserved sea*, tickets have been eagerly sought after, and there is every probability of tha Assembly Rooms being packed to-night. Mr McGu re, M.H.R., has returned from a tiait t» the Hot Lakes. He state* (says the Hawera Star) that one day a square chain of ground was suddenly blown up within a few hundred yards of where a par>y were standing, and a splendid new neyser was immediately in active work. The rey gentleman, on entonng the pulpit, announced that the Bishop of Manchester was making a tour of hia diocese, and might shortly bo expected to visit this church. There is some dread iv Liberal circles that, among others, the Hon R. J. Seddon w II " rise up Sir Richard " when the Queen's Birthday honors are published. We see no objection, because if Sir Robert Stout survived the operation we are quite certain Sir Richard Sed .lon would "pull through" it. If they m vie Mr Seddon a lord or a duke, his friends would still affectionately think aud speak of him as " Dick." On Saturday (says the Mauawatu Times) the charitable aid officer was interviewed by a mau who presented a prescription aud requested an order on the chemist to supply him with medicine. In answer to enquiries the sufferer said he wai suffering from a severe attack of " acute alcoholism." The charitable aid officer said the Board did not undertake the cure of such cases. During tli3 homeward journey on Saturday ni^ht from Woodville, the Pirate footbxll team suddenly fouud themselves thrown from their conveyance into the middle of the road. It appears that a brake had stopped on the road and he lights from it dazzling the eyes of the driver caused him to drive on to a bank with the result that tho coach was upset. Beyond a shaking and a few bruises no damage was done to any of the occupants of the vehicle. The coach was speedily righted aud tbe foot jailers went on their way rejoicing. — Standard. Notice is given to-day by the Clerk of the Manchester Road Board that at a meeting of the Board to be held on the 4th of June two special orders will be confirmed. One is that a -special rate of two elevenths of a penny in the £ be made upon the rateable value of the whole of the rateable property (Crown and Native lauds occupied by Native owners eic-cep^ed) witbiu the boundaries of No. 3 sub-division of the Manchester Road District, to pay interest on a loau of £1686 ; aud the other is for a special rate of one-ninth of a penny in tlie £' be made {upon similar property witbiu tbe boundaries of No. 4 subdivision of the said Board, for the payment of interest ou a loau of £1130. A special meeting of the Feilding I Borough Council will be held at noon on Thursday, the 10th inst., for the purpose of hearing objections to the burgess list. A fresli advertisement will appear in to-morrow's issue anent the purchase of Mr F. Gabites' assigned stock by John Cobbe. Owing to Mr Cobbe's offer being prompt cash, he secured the stock at a price which will enable him to offer the goods at less than wholesale cost price. They were married and the bridegroom gave her as a wedding present an insurance policy on his life for £1000. He died suddenly a little over a year after the wedding. She communicated the sad news to her mother in a telegram — "Jim died of fever last night. Loss fully covered by iusurance." A serious shooting accident occurred yesterday morniug near Pahautanui. Mr Wm. Millon, a farmer of the district, and his brother were out shooting quail. By some unknown cause the brother's giiu went off, aud the whole of the charge lodged iv the upper portiou of Mr Millen right leg. Tho injured man was brought in to the Hospital, where his injuries were attended to by Dr Ewart. On examination it was fouud that about 40 or 50 shots had entered the limb, only nine of which could be then extracted. No bones were broken, nor was any artery severed, but the injuries are nevertheless serious.— N.Z. Times. _^
