Pemberton Notes.
j>UOM OUfi OWN COBBKSPONDENT.] A meeting of householders was held at the schoolhouse on Monday evening to receive the annual report and elect a new committee. Notwithstanding the rough night there were fifteen present. Mr Stent was voted to the chain The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 3s. road had been metalled to the school at a cost of £8 Is, of which £5 11s was raised by subscription. The Inspector's report was also read, showing total on roll was 42, of which 40 were presented, the percentage of passes being 89 1. The report was considered very satisfactory, especially in the face of the fact that the attendance for a part of the year had been very poor. A committee was then elected consisting of Messrs J. J. Bryce, 0. L. Pemberton, J. D. McGregor, Grant and Carey (chairman). A vote of thanks to the retiring chairman, Mr Jas. Stent, closed the meeting. A subscription list for .a prize fund was opened in the room and £3 5s subscribed. The list will be taken round the school district, and it is proposed to hold an entertainment of some sort for the children's amusement — probably on the 24th May — when the prizes wiil be distributed. , At the close of the meeting the attention of those present was called to the fact that a meeting would be held in Ohingaiti on Thursday, 26th, at 1 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the question of the Otara bridge and the road leading thereto. It now appears, that not withstanding the fact that £1250 was placed in the estimates for this work and a second £1250 promised to a deputation at Ohingaiti, the Government now wish to recede from the position entirely, withdrawing all assistance to the bridge and intimating their intention ot building the bridge at Three Log Whare. It is proposed to send a strong deputation to Wellington to again interview Ministers on the subject. It was pointed out that the Government gave as a reason for withdrawing their ■ support to the bridge that the Otara bridge would only benefit two or three large land; owners, and to confute this it was hoped that time would be afforded to get a petition signed by settlers in this district all of whom are desirous of getting an outlet to Obingaiti By the way, no reply seems to have been received from Government re the repairs to the Kimbolton road. They have no doubt been waiting till the season is too far advanced to do anything. Any money spent now in gravelling would simply be wasted.
