FIRE AND WATER.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — On reading the statement of estimates for the Feilding Borough for 1894-5, I was surprised to see that the Council are unable — or have not thought fit — to allot any sum for Fire Extinction Service. The appliances of the Brigade are very small, but much I could be done if, say, £50 a year were voted to the funds, and as it is, sure to be some years before a water supply is obtained, I would suggest to tbe burgesses the urgent need there is to take some steps in the matter to procure some sort of a supply. We could, as many other towns have done, have wells sunk at all the main crossings, or elsewhere in suitable places. With this and some £25 worth of plant added to our Manual engine, we could get four jets of water on a fire. At present we can only get two jets, and that not more than 500 ft from the Makino stream (and this is dry when most needed) or from our well, as the case may be. No doubt, sir, you will agree the water supply or more water storage is of much importance, and even a greater necessity than the lighting of the Borough. lam afraid, sir, we shall have the town lighted at a very heavy cost unless some scheme is carried out very speedily to enable the Brigade to cope with such a terrible disaster as a big tire. I am, etc., Alfred Eade, Captain F.V.F.B.
