Pohangina Road Board.
The above Board met on Saturday last. Present— Messrs Dickin (chairman) Bell, Arbon and Browne. On the initiates of the previous meeting being read Warden Browne took exception to the motion calling up the special rate in No 1 Ward, tie said that if he had been present at the meeting ho . would have given good reasons to prove that the rate wag unnecessary. There i was no precedent for the Board doing | business of this kind in the absence of the representative. Under the circumstances he considered the action of the Board unwise, unfair and dishonorable^ He proposed that the motion calling up the special rate in No I Ward be recinded. CORRESPONDENCE. ' A large □umber of letters were read, but the following only were of public interest: — From the Commissioner of Taxes, forwarding a schedule of lands in the Pobangina Road District alienated from the Crown from Ist January. 21893, to 30th April, 1893. r From Edward Hunt, requesting the Board to substitute the name of William Hunt on rate roll for section 22, Block XIV, Awabou-Pohangina. From Messrs Bramley, Levers, CShea and others requesting the Board to extend No 2 Line, Pohangina- Awahou Block. —c— From D. Davis and J. W. Davis, requesting to have their name placed on the roll instead of that of Miss E. Pakcer. : From the Secretary of Eiwitea Road Board, forwarding resolution referring | to expenditure of thirds from Messrs Howie, Mcßeth, Ashworth and others. Several letters upon formal matters were received from the Commisioner of Crown Lauds. In one, the writer xegreted the Department was unable to supply certain information asked for, as the officers were so pressed with work. From F. G. Moore, offering to supply express rate tables. From the Secretary of Hospital and Charitable Aid Board; .notifying the Board had been assessed to pay £45 15s and requesting payment of £23 lls on account. From Mr Pirani, M.H.8., offering to take charge of a Bill next session to constitute the Pohangina Boad district into a county, and offering to have the bill prepared, if the Board required it. From the Chairman of Nikau School Committee, asking the Board to provide footbridges over the two branches of the Mangaone stream for the convenience of the scholars attending the school. From Messrs Brown, Finnis and Harrison, drawing attention to the bad state of the branch road in the Harbor Block; From John Jefferies, Bunnythorpe, requesting to have Pollock's road put in repair. From the Engineer, forwarding usual report. Mr Hayns again urged the necessity of some improvements being effected to the road between the school and the Pohangina township. From the Under Secretary Lands and Survey, 11th April, as follows: — "In reply to your memo of the 23rd October last (which has been overlooked) asking where the .£IOOO placed on the estimates last year had been spent, I have the honor to inform you that the money was expended by co-operative labor on the Pohangina, Oroua, and London roads. 1 * From James Symonds, Ashurst, applying for refund of £6 for bushfeUisg on road line in Block TL From J. H. Lyou, forwarding account for £2 15s 6d, fox boshfelling on road line. From H, Adsett and Son, offering to pay £ for £ towards the metalling of the road through five chains of swamp between the Pohangina township and their sawmill. — The Board agreed to vote £6 towards the work requested. RESOLUTIONS PASSED. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Warden Browne, That the Secretary bo instructed to convey to Mrs Lucas the sincere sympathy of this Board in the loss she has sustained in the death of her husband. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Warden Bell, That the Secretary be instructed to apply to Colonial Treasurer for balance of loan of £5,492 for No. 2 Ward. Resolved, That the Wardens present sign the ratebook. The Secretary was requested to write to the Kiwitea Boad Board, requesting a refund of the sum of £10 14s, which that body had not expended on the drain from Terrace Road. Permission was granted to Mr T. Currau to erect a fence on the Pohangina road to protect a tine fence. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the authority of the Land Board for leasing a gravel reserve at Apiti to Mr Buckman. The names of William Hunt, D. and J. Davis, and T. Babbage, were ordered to be inserted ou the rate roll. It was resolved to accept the verbal offer of Messrs. Baker and Millet to give tofcara logs for bridging {tie two branches of the Mangaone stream. The Secretary was appointed Return* ing Officer for the annual election of members. It was decided, owing to the elec.sions, (hat the next meeting of the Board be held on the 16th May—third Saturday in the month. The Engineer was instructed tp spend a sum not exceeding £20 in effecting repairs to the Branch read; No. 1 Ward, ami a similar amount! on the voad between the sohoolhottsearialfierßohanigna township. MISCELLANEOUS. W^ Mr Arthur waited on the Board, to ask that the Board should proceed with the continuation of No. 8 line, but as Jm nanio was not on the roll the Chair. man ruled that ho could not address the Board upon the subject. After passing accounts for payment, tho meeting terminated.— Standard.
