Wreck of the S.S. Kiwi.
LATEU PARTICULARS. (PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION ) Wellington, April 12. The Dueo returned from Glenburn to-night with the crew of the ill-fatel Kiwi. Captain Campbell, of the Kiwi, reports having arrived at Glenburn from Wellington at daylight on Wednesday, blowing a hard nor'wester. Later in the day, however, he landed a cargo and started for Flat Point at about 1 p.m. He remained at the hoim until the Kahu rocks wore passed, and was then relieved by one of the crew, orders being given to keep the vessel on the present course. Later on the captain and engineer, who were on the deck, felt the vessel graze on some sunken object, but very slightly, and the con tact was so slight that those in the engine-room and also those forward did not feel the concussion. Captain Campbell on looking over the side saw the vessel nearly down to the plimsoll, and called out she was sinking. The pumps were sounded, but no water recorded. Captain Campbell then forked down the chain locker and saw the vessel was doomed, as there was seven feet of water there. The vessel at that time was two miles off the shore. The surf boat was lowered, and the crew, with the daughter of the mate, and Mr Ferrall, a passenger for Flat Point, got in, sixteen in all. After the boat was thirty or forty yards away the Kiwi disappeared. Captain Campbell is of opinion that the rock on which she struck is of ;v pinnacle shape, and gays had the accident happened at night all hands j would have been lost.
