Apiti Notes.
IMPORTANT MEETING OF SETTLEBS. The aCljoumed meeting of ratepayers in No. 5 Ward of the Pohaugiua Road District to consider the appointment of a member to represent the Ward on the Board was held iv the Apiti Schoolhouse 011 Tuesday evening, when, there was a fair attendance. The idea was that the feeling of the ratepayers should be tested on the matter, and as the candidate selected at the meetiug would, iv all probability, receive the greatest support if a poll was taken, it would be unnecessary to have a contested election, and tbua savo tho cost of a poll. Mr Guy was voted to the chair and explained that the meeting was called to appoint a successor to the late Mr G. R. Lucas. The names of Messrs E. Goodbehere and Vicavy were put forward as being suitable persons to represent the Ward. The former gentleman, as is well known, resides in Feilding, and a requisition signed by twenty-four ratepayers in the Ward was presented to him a few days, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the position. Mr Goodbehere replied that if it was the unanimous wish of the settlers lie was willing to do so. Several speakers at the meeting strongly advocated the election of a I local man, as they considered the district had been neglected iv the past through being repro -:cntcl by Wardens [ living outside. These ratepayers expressed a determination to support a candidate residing in the district, and selected Mr Vicary for the position. On tbe other hand, an equally decided opinion was expressed that Mr Goodbehere's knowledge of local body management would be of advantage. Eventually, each section being determined to support their man at a poll, the matter dropped. After the question of a Warden was disposed of, Mr Nix introduced the matter of the removal of the cemetery, or more correctly, tho selection of a more suitable site. Some time ago an agitation was started with that object, but it is now considered the present site is better that the one proposed to be kccured. It was decided to retain the I present site, which is vested in seven ' trustees, some of whom did not know of their appointmcut, by Gazette notice. At present the cemetery is covered with standing bush, and the urgent necessity of its beiug cleared is very apparent iv such a growing settlement. It is probable a meetiug of the Trustees will be called .at an early date when it is hoped, by those who would like to sec the graves of departed friends taken care of, that immediate steps will be taken to clear the cemetery. Mr Vicary has promised to give sufficient ornamental trees to plant along the front of the section, and it remains for the trustees to move further iv the matter. Another matter of importance to those resident, not only in the Feildiug Small : Farm Block, but in those adjacent, was also brought vp — namely, the mail service. At present the mails are sent I from Birmingham twice a week, which is considered inadequate, and it was resolved that a petition be prepared, and signed, for presentation to the Post-niitst<-r-Gciieral, through Mr F. Pirani, MILK., praying tluit .a tii-wcekly mail ! service be substitutcl, the days suggested being Mondays. Wednesdays, and Friday*. Mr Vicary asked to prepare the petition and send it to Mr ! Pirani when the signatures have been obtained. Mr Vicary asked those who attended the meeting to consider the feasibility of starting a creamery or butter factory in Apiti. There is some talk of forming a company to erect a town hall iv Apiti, and several gentlemen have expressed their willingness to support the movement. At present all meetings are held in the school house, where the seating accommodation is quite inadequate. The temperance people in this district are waking up, and a lodge is about to be started, but the great drawback is the want of a suitable building in which to meet.
