Pohangina Notes.
[PHOM OUB CORRESPONDENT J The approach to our creamery is being metalled in readiness for the wet weather. A sandy road is good enough for summer time, but it draws heavily in winter. The first consignment of Pohangina cheese has been put on board the train this month (March, 1894). A good deal I has been sold locally and has given entire satisfaction, Mr Cunningham, the manager, having graduated under good tutors at the Stirling Factory, in Otago. Eighty cases have been consigned to an English firm from our Victoria Factory, on the Pohangina road. Mr Hall, of Palmerston, is building a house near the Victoria Factory, haying hired some grass from Mr Warne. Sixty cows, it is said, is the carrying capacity of the grass. There arc indications that many other farmers will take advantage of this factory next season. The awfully sudden death of Mr G. R. Lucas has created a profound sensation. The deceased gentleman was so widely known, and so much respected for his public usefulness, that he will be greatly missed by Pohangina residents generally. The sympathy with Mrs Lucas and her family in their bereavment is universal. The two miles of road-clearing in the Salisbury Block undertaken by the Labour Bureau, which has been placed under the supervision of Mr H. J. Haynes, our engineer, have been very quickly put in hand ; the contracts are let to local men, who have made a good start. The Labor Bureau having made a start with our Small Farm Blocks roads, and the Government having formed a portion of the road through the 1000-acre Forest reserve, our Road Board has been considerably relieved. Mr Pirani, member for this district, is doing bis best to get another £500 put on the estimates. Our State School picnic is to be hold on Easter Monday. There is also the Church of England Sunday School picnic at Ashurst on the same day. A four-roomed house belonging to Mr P. Cavanagb, of Ashurst, was burned to the ground on Wednesday. The origin of the tire is unknown.
