Melancholy Boating Accident.

«. THREE LIVES LOST. (I'KH PRKSS ASSOCIATION). Invehcaroill, March 12. Another lamentable boating accident occurred this morning in the New River Estuary. A party of young people had gone out in a large half-deckod boat known as the Irene, and it is said that the halyards fouling, one of the party, Lionel Bews, climbed the mast to clear them. His weight caused the boat to heel over, fill and sink. Three out of the six occupants wore drowned. Their names are:— Bessie Bain, 27 years of age. the eldest daughter of Mr W. Bain, ex M.H.R ; Mabel Stow, 19, only daughter of Mr Stow, of the Bank of New Zealand, aud L)onel Bews. 22, son of tho Town Engineer at Warruambool, Victoria, formerly of Invercargill. The other three, Peter Dalrymple, junr., Charles Rout, junr., and Grace Bain were saved by a boat whick came to the spot a miuute or two too late to save all the party. Bews, who was au excellent swimmer, lo*t his life in the endeavour to save the two girls, liuiit, one of the rescued, says that Bews did ngt climb tlje mast, and that Miss S^y was steering. There was almost a dead calm at the time, and the boat was a stable craft. Dalrymple is in the Deeds Office, and clerk a$ the Supreme Court, iiew.s was iv the same office.
