Whilst bushfelling on Mr Reids property up the Makino yesterday, a man named Henry Brant met with a painful accident. In falling a rnafcai tree henoticed that it was coming back ou him, and in running to get out of the way, he fell over a log with the axe in his hand, and received a very nasty cut on one of his legs. Dr Charlton was called aud attended to the man's iv juries which arc of a somewhat dangerous character. The Wellington Press is somewhat severe. Our contemporary says :—Ministers brag that the colony's finances are so perfect that the surplus is growing day and night ; then how is it that they are cutting down the number of co-oper. atives ? How comes it there is such scraping aud shaving of expenses in every quarter? Why these desperate efforts at parsimony with a till chock full and welling over already with v, surplus . The nominations for Dr Benuett's two horses Finesse and Pihanga for the three Hack races at the Feilding Jockey Club's Autumn meeting did not come to hand in time for acceptance yesterday. The Wesleyan annual picnic takes place on the Oval to-morrow afternoon. The committee have been working hard to make the gathering a success, which doubtless it will be. We learn that Mr Hill, F.R.G.S., of Napier, who is a recognised authority on the subject, has expressed the opinion that Feilding is a most likely spot in which to obtain a flow of artesian water. In our report of the handicaps yesterday of the Pemberton Sports in the one mile handicap, A. Rogers, A. Wisdom, R. Richardson, and P. Hackett, should receive 125 yards handicap and not 200 as stated. While the name of A. Sangster 10 yards handicap is omitted in the 100 yards handicap. Mr Richard Pronse, one of Wellington's oldest identities, and father of Mr John Prouse (the well-known baryt-one singer) a«d Mecsrs Prouse Bros (sawmillers of Levin) died in Wellington on Sunday at the advanced age of 64 years. Deceased came out to Wellington in the ship Duke of Roxburgh in 1840 when a boy ten j-ears of age, and took up land at Waiuui-o-mata 40 years ago. A youthful colonial who is at present working somewhere in the Wanganui Harbor Board Block has ideas of his own on the subject of dental surgery and economy. He had a decayed tooth which he wished extracted, so he made fast to it a piece of strong twine, the other end of which he inserted in a partially split bullet and then hammered it close iv a good grip. He took the gun in his hand, and '.veut ont in the bush to combine pleasure with economy by bagging something for the pot on which to exercise his remaining molars. Presently he sighted a wholesome looking young pig, and dropping the bullet down the barrel of his gun he took stead)' aim and fired. The pig was slain. In his agitation this sportsman and amateur dentist had clinched his teeth, so. when the ball sped it dragged out the tooth, and at the same time loosened a few others aud also made his mouth two sizes larger. But he says he doesn't mind, he lost a tooth and a little skin and blood, but gained a good fat pig.
