CAPT. SMITH, OF DUNEDIN, WINS 1 THE CHAMPIONSHIP. (PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CiiHiSTcnuRCH, March 7 Tho Council further considered Corpl. Walker' s case and found the offence was ( not intentional, and fined him £1, to be disqualified until the amount is paid. t Voile}' firing match, open to 20 Volunteers from each Volunteer District, 500 yards, 7 volleys (prizes given by Defence , Minister)— Canterbury £20, 385 ; Auck- ' land £10, 383 ; Wanganui, Napier, and Taranaki £5, 344 ; Otago, 327. Following are the ten first aggregates for the Championship : —
Capt. Smith, the Champion, receives .£'3s, the clmnipion rifle belt, and a gold medal given by the Defence Minister. Henderson receives £25 and silver star ; Gray, £20 and silver star; Howe, £15 and silver star; Jack, £10 and silver star ; France, McFarlane, Smith, Cameron, and A. Ballinger, £5 each. Gray beat Howe in fixing off for third place, making 11 against 10. Ballinger and HuinphreyH tied for 10th position, and Ballinger won on firing off by 16 to 13. Mr Tonkin, of the Waikari Bifle Club, with 37, being the highest scorer in the champion match, holds the riflle cup for the year. The district representative match, for 20 Volunteers from each Volunteer district, 500 and 600 yards, 10 shots, resulted an follows: -Wellington, 1498; Wanganui, Taranaki, and Napier, 1474 ; Canterbury, 1462; Otago and South-* land, 1452'; Auckland, 1398. Only the press match remains to be fired, and camp is to be struck tomorrow. This Day. The press match was abandoned, and after the staff aud the markers had fired the meeting broke up. Col. Gorton came out top in the staff, and Gunner Kelly, of Oainaru, in the markers' match. Out of 210 men competing, 168 have won prizes, varying in amounts from £31 to £1. With the presentation of prizes this afternoon the 1894 meeting closes. The following are the amounts won by the districts : — Otago, £291 ; Canterbury, £178; Wellington, £154; Auckland, £152; Wanganui, £99 ; Southland, £69 ; Hawke's Bay, £66; WestTand, £16 ; Marlborough, £11 ; Nelson, £8 ; Gisborne, £3 ; total, £1047. A protest has been lodged in the District Bepreseutative Match by the representatives of Taranaki, Wanganui, and Napier districts against Wellington winning the match, on the ground that Randall, one of the team, does not reside in the district. Randall fired through the meeting as a member of the Petone Bifle Club, which is in the Wellington district, but it is alleged he lives in Palnierston North. The Council will investigate the matter tbis afternoon. Amongst the list of prize-takers, of £5 and upwards, appears the name of Vol Scott, of the Manchester Bifles, as winning £5.
