Postal Conference.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, March 6. A letter was read from Mr Huddart to the New Zealand Government asking what amount of subsidy New Zealand was prepared to offer in the event of a port of call in the Vancouver line being established in the colony.—The letter was ordered to be printed. The Hon. Mr Ward moved, " That this conference is favorable to a four weekly service alternating with the 'Frisco service between Australia, New Zealnnd, and Vancouver, mail steamers calling at one main port in New Zealand, and such ports it. Australia as may be detprmined upon." He said New Zealand was prepared to subsidise the Vancouver service to the extent of £10,C00 a year if the colony was included in the port of call, but not if the service required a line of steamers to fconnect with Sydney for the purposes of transhipment. By supporting the Canadian service they might make the United States Government realise the necessity of contributing to the 'Frisco service more liberally. Messrs Kidd (New South Wales) and Wilson (Queensland) could not commit their Governments to such a service. Mr Wynn, Victoria, said Victoria was anxious to support the service if Melbourne could be made a port of call. The motion was seconded by Mr Kidd and carried.
