BIRMINGHAM AND APITI ROADS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THK STAH. Sik,— lt is the intention of the settlers in and ft round Birmingham to tuke ad* vantage ot the polls for the loans in con nection with the Birmingham and Apiti Wards on the 16th. inst. to hold an indignation meeting. The subject to be brought before the meeting is the state of the Kimbolton road. This road leads to the State Farm and Crown Lands, and commands a considerable amount of trafic. The late Premier, Mr Baljance, promised that in consideration of the settlers paying 2/6 per acre for their land in excess of the upset price, that the main roads should be formed and metalled This promise has been brought before the present Premier, but the reply sent has been to the effect that they have no official record of any eucb promise It is within the memory of most settJere here that Mr BalJance did make such a promise, and at the meeting no doubt we shall hear from them to that effect. The Premier alio omits to mention for what reason the settlers paid 2/6 per acre over and above what they were legitimately required to pay, and we are left to asBume that they did it from a purely philanthropic point of view. During the late Premier's lifetime he certainly supplemented his promise to a certain extent, at the instance of Mr Macarthur, a former member for this constituency. The district which the Kimbo'tan load tends to open up is one of the newest and most progressive in the North Island, and as such deserves every encouragement at the hands of the Government. But what is the result? The Secretary of tbe branch of tlio Liberal Association here writes to the Premier nskjug him to fulfil hjs promise to the deputation vvhjch waited on him m Feilding previous to the lust general election with regard to the I^nubolton road, and no reply is received. Our member, Mr Stevens, has been requested to attend this meeting, when it is hoped that he will do his utmost to uphold the pledges given by him to bis supporters ljef.e before t/ie last general election. I urn, efo., j$E/J."rkJi#. Birmingham, March 6, 16'Ji.
