London Markets.
John McNairn and Co., Glasgow, report for the fortnight ending January 19th :— Butter — During the past fortnight there has been an active demand, and as high as 116s was made last week for choice quality of Colonial, with lower grades at from 108s to 1 1 2s. This week, however, the market is decidedly quieter again, on account of milder weather, and also more liberal supplies of Danish and Swedish, and top price now of Colonial is 112s, at which there is only a retail sale. Copenhagen is expected to be unchanged to-day, and if that is so it will steady the market somewhat. Irish is really in small compass, and what is offering is easily placed. Cheese— Cheese has been decidedly strong, and looks like going much higher. On the other side you will notice we have advanced the pi ice of Septembers Is per cwt., namely, to 57s to 58s, at which there has been a steady consumptive trade passing. The first shipment of New Zealand cheese arrived in London last week by by the Ruapehu", on Lo>rd of which steamer there were 1200 cases, and these had a fail* sale at 50s. "We look forward to see New Zealand cheese selling better than ever, and should not be surprised to see GOs being made for the next shipment, which is due in the course of a fortnight. Choice Scotch cheese are somewhat better again, and mediums are in smaller supply, but yet we cannot quote any advance in price.
