♦ A MINISTER IN DEFENCE OF THE BLACKS. ALLEGED CAUSE OF CANNIBALISM. [?EB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Bbisbane, This Day. At the Wesleyan Conference the Rev. ! Mr Payne made serious charges against the whites residing in the far north. He alleged that the blacks were shot down as a nuisance, causing them to flee to parts where food was scarce, the result being cannibalism. Ciiristciiukch March 6. At the Wesleyan Conference a number of ministers and leading citizens attended, and addresses of greeting and congratulation were given by the Mayor of Christchurch and clergymen of various denominations. The Rev. W. Morley was unanimously re-appointed connexional secretary. It was resolved to take up ii special collection to wipe off a deficit of .£'#Bo on the Home Mission Fund.
