Accident on the Manawatu Railway Line.

» We learn from the Mauawatu Standard that the up-tram from Welling ton on Saturday collided with a derailed truck on the railway line at Plimmerton. The engine struck the truck, whicii was only noticed when about a chain away after rounding a bend, full on, smashing the buffer and some of the fore pirt of the engine, rearing the truck up in the air on its back wheels, and bringing it down on tbe cab of the engine again with a crash. As the engine continued its course the truck wheels tore half of the cab protecting the driver clean away, and finally lodged against a sheep truck in the train. Standing on the siding were a couple of carriages, a sheep truck and goods truck, and both of tho latter were derailed and considerably damaged. The carriages were uninjured, but the truck which caused the accident was smashed up almost beyond recognition. It is conjectured that some of the children ruralising at Plimmerton must have been playing with the truck and when they found they had derailed it had cleared out of the way without telling anyone.
